A Career Defined by Growth and Impact

With over three decades of experience in teaching, research, and university administration, Prof. Dozie has built a reputation as a transformative academic leader. His journey began at Imo State University before moving to FUTO in 2011 through a transfer of service. At FUTO, he rose through the ranks, holding several strategic positions including Head of the Department of Public Health, pioneer Dean of the School of Health Technology, and Director of Linkages and Advancement.

During his tenure as Dean, the School of Health Technology recorded significant milestones, including securing full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for key programmes such as Optometry and Public Health. The school also produced its first Doctor of Optometry and PhD graduates in Public Health, while hosting the university’s maiden International Congress on Health Sciences and Technology.

Academic Excellence and Research Leadership

A Professor of Microbiology with specialization in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Prof. Dozie has distinguished himself in research and mentorship. He has supervised over 200 undergraduate projects, more than 35 postgraduate students, and at least 10 PhD candidates.

His research portfolio includes grants and collaborations with global institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO), CODESRIA, TETFund, and the World Bank. His contributions to infectious disease research, including malaria, HIV/AIDS, and onchocerciasis, have earned him recognition both locally and internationally.

Beyond research, he delivered FUTO’s 34th Inaugural Lecture and mentored the institution’s first Fulbright Scholar, further cementing his legacy as a scholar committed to academic excellence and capacity building.

Leadership at KOMU

Prof. Dozie’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University marked a new phase in his career. At the relatively young state university, he applied his wealth of experience to strengthen institutional frameworks, focusing on accreditation, partnerships, and research development.

His leadership at KOMU has been described as pragmatic and growth-oriented, mirroring his earlier successes at FUTO. His return to FUTO is therefore seen as a strategic move that brings back a tested administrator with a deep understanding of the institution’s culture and needs.

A Vision for the Future

Observers note that Prof. Dozie’s election comes at a critical time when Nigerian universities are seeking leaders capable of navigating challenges such as funding constraints, accreditation demands, and global competitiveness.

With his track record in grant management, curriculum development, and institutional advancement, stakeholders believe he is well-positioned to steer FUTO towards greater innovation and academic excellence.

Personal Life and Legacy

Prof. Dozie holds a PhD in Medical Entomology and Parasitology from the University of Jos, a Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology, and a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology/Biochemistry from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also a fellow of several professional bodies and has undergone leadership training both locally and internationally.

He is married to Dr. Chinomso Patricia Dozie, a staff of the Directorate of General Studies at FUTO.

Conclusion

From his early days in academia to leading two universities, Prof. Dozie’s journey reflects dedication, resilience, and a commitment to institutional development. His return to FUTO as Vice-Chancellor is widely regarded as a homecoming that could usher in a new era of growth for the institution.

As stakeholders await his assumption of office, expectations remain high that his leadership will consolidate past gains while positioning FUTO as a leading hub for science, technology, and innovation in Nigeria.
