Ugochinyere declares APP Imo’s top opposition party

*Urges newly elected executives to be proactive, committed

The Action People’s Party (APP) has reaffirmed its position as the leading opposition force in Imo State following the successful conduct of its ward and local government congresses across the state.

Speaking on Saturday in Akokwa, Ideato North, during the inauguration of newly elected executives, the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency, Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, declared that the party’s growing grassroots structure and recent congress outcomes have further strengthened its dominance in the opposition space.

The congresses, which held yesterday across all wards and local government areas, were described by party leaders as peaceful, transparent, and well-coordinated. Party officials said the exercise witnessed massive participation by members, with new executives emerging through what they termed a credible and inclusive process aimed at deepening internal democracy and repositioning the party ahead of 2027.

Ugochinyere said the successful congresses have solidified APP’s structure from the grassroots to the state level, insisting that no other opposition party in Imo can match its reach and influence.

“In Imo, no other party offers strong opposition apart from APP. With what we saw during the congresses, our structure is intact from ward to local government and now fully re-energised. There is hardly any family in Imo without a member of this party. APP is built on equity, fairness, and an open-door policy that continues to attract the people,” he stated.

He noted that the party’s growing acceptance is also reflected in its performance at the national level, stressing that APP currently holds the second-largest representation in the state after the ruling party.

“Out of the 10 federal constituencies in Imo, APP has secured two seats. That is a milestone, and we are not stopping there. With the new executives in place after these congresses, we are set to win more constituencies,” he said.

The lawmaker also highlighted the party’s legislative impact, boasting that APP lawmakers are delivering visible projects and programmes in their constituencies.

“Our projects are numerous — from water and sanitation to community development and empowerment initiatives. In fact, commissioning them could take a whole month because of their scale. We will soon showcase them for all to see,” he added.

Ugochinyere charged the newly elected ward and local government executives to build on the momentum generated by the congresses by expanding membership and strengthening the party’s grassroots appeal ahead of the 2027 elections.

He, however, issued a stern warning that performance would be closely monitored, stressing that any leader who fails to deliver would be replaced.

“With these congresses, the real work begins. Leaders must be inclusive, proactive, and committed. Anyone who underperforms will give way for those ready to work,” he warned.
