-Imo APC bans zoning talks -Warns against holding political meetings - Aspirants confused as fate of 2027 hopefuls hangs on Uzodimma’s consensus plan

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has barred party members, aspirants and stakeholders from holding unauthorized political meetings or engaging in zoning discussions ahead of the party primaries, a development already causing tension and uncertainty within the ruling party.

The party, in a fresh directive issued through its leadership, warned that any meeting convened without the approval of the State Working Committee (SWC) would attract sanctions.

According to the APC, no gathering relating to endorsements, zoning arrangements or nomination processes should hold unless expressly approved through the party’s official communication channel.

The directive further stated that Senatorial District, Local Government Area and Ward chapters must obtain permission before summoning any political meeting.

The party also warned against the use of cultural groups, community associations and pressure groups to organize meetings aimed at influencing the primaries or endorsing candidates.

It stressed that aspirants, party leaders and members who attend or instigate such unauthorized meetings risk disciplinary action.

The development, however, has reportedly thrown many aspirants into confusion, as several of them are said to be uncertain about their next political steps ahead of the 2027 elections.

Investigations revealed that even aspirants believed to enjoy strong grassroots popularity have slowed down consultations and political engagements while waiting for Governor Hope Uzodimma and the party leadership to decide who eventually emerges through the widely discussed consensus arrangement.

Within the party, there are growing fears that the stringent directives may be targeted mainly at aspirants and political figures perceived not to be fully loyal to Governor Uzodimma or those believed to be outside his political camp.

Some stakeholders alleged that the order may be aimed at weakening influential politicians with independent political structures and grassroots acceptance before the primaries begin.

The situation has also sparked criticism among party faithful and political stakeholders, many of whom argue that allowing only a few individuals to determine candidates under the guise of consensus could create deeper cracks within the APC in Imo State.

According to some party members, consensus should emerge through broad consultations and agreement among stakeholders, not through what they described as “political imposition from above.”

Observers warn that the growing tension, silence among aspirants and restriction of political consultations may eventually backfire on the party if not properly managed.

Some analysts believe the move could trigger internal rebellion, silent protests or even defections if party members begin to feel excluded from the decision-making process ahead of the primaries.

Political observers say the latest directive reflects the rising battle for control of the APC structure in Imo State as permutations for the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum behind the scenes.
