Defection: Only ‘Unpopular Moneybags’ Left Imo APC — Publicity Secretary

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State has dismissed reports of mass defections from its ranks, insisting that only “unpopular moneybags” and politically irrelevant elements have exited the party.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the State Publicity Secretary, Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, described the defection claims as “incipient fake news,” stressing that the party remains strong, united and firmly in control of its internal structures.

According to the statement, the APC in Imo has witnessed increased membership in recent weeks, with many politically conscious residents either registering afresh or revalidating their membership. The party claimed that about 90 percent of active political participants in the state now identify with it.

Jones maintained that no “valuable” member of the party had resigned, arguing that those claiming to have defected were either inactive members, impostors who never formally joined, or individuals who had long distanced themselves from party activities.

“The political liabilities and unpopular moneybags who claim to have left were either dormant or never truly part of the party,” the statement said.

The party further reaffirmed confidence in its leadership under State Chairman, Austin Onyedebelu, noting that aspirants and stakeholders across the state continue to demonstrate loyalty and faith in the party’s structure ahead of future elections.

It also reiterated assurances by Governor Hope Uzodimma, leader of the party in the state, that candidate selection processes would strictly comply with the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended), the party’s constitution, and guidelines for the forthcoming primaries.

The APC acknowledged attempts by what it described as “undemocratic individuals” to hijack the party’s nomination process, but insisted that internal mechanisms have been activated to prevent such actions.

The statement highlighted the recently concluded ward-to-state congresses, describing them as peaceful and seamless, in contrast to previous exercises marked by disputes. It added that measures have been put in place to sustain unity and harmony within the party.

Reaffirming loyalty to Uzodimma’s leadership, the party urged members and the public to disregard what it called misleading reports, accusing “rejected politicians” of spreading falsehoods in a bid to regain relevance.

“Imo APC is intact. Hijackers have been kept at bay,” the statement concluded.
