Aftermath of Congress: Crisis looms in Imo APC
*As members grumble over alleged imposition of candidates

Barely days after the All Progressives Congress (APC) concluded its state congress in Imo, murmurs of discontent are beginning to surface across different levels of the party, raising fears of a possible internal crisis.
Although the congress produced a new state executive led by Chief Austin Onyedebelu as chairman, some party members and stakeholders have privately expressed dissatisfaction with the process that led to the emergence of the new leadership.
Several party faithful who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that the congress was largely predetermined, claiming that many aspirants were either unaware of the availability of nomination forms or were discouraged from participating.
According to some of the aggrieved members, the absence of open contestation for many positions has left a section of the party’s grassroots structure feeling sidelined. They argue that the lack of broad participation could weaken internal cohesion ahead of the political activities leading to the 2027 general elections.
“There is a growing perception among party members that the outcome of the congress was decided long before the exercise took place,” a party stakeholder said. “If the concerns are not addressed quickly, it may create unnecessary tension within the party.”
Others, however, have urged caution, insisting that disagreements following party congresses are not unusual in Imo politics and can often be resolved through dialogue and reconciliation.
Supporters of the newly elected leadership have also dismissed the complaints as the usual grievances that trail political contests. They argue that the congress followed the guidelines provided by the national leadership of the APC and that the outcome reflected the consensus of party stakeholders in the state.
A party official who spoke in defense of the process noted that the leadership would soon begin consultations aimed at bringing all factions together.
“Our party remains united. What you are hearing are isolated opinions. The leadership will engage everyone to ensure that the APC in Imo continues to move forward as one family,” the official said.
Political observers in the state say the emerging disagreements, if not carefully managed, could test the internal stability of the ruling party in the coming months. They note that congresses often serve as a foundation for future political alignments, particularly as attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 elections.
Some analysts also believe that the controversy surrounding the congress may be tied to broader political calculations within the state, especially regarding the zoning debate and succession discussions ahead of the next governorship race.
For now, the party leadership has yet to make a formal statement addressing the concerns being raised by aggrieved members. However, insiders say behind-the-scenes efforts are already underway to calm nerves and prevent the situation from escalating.
Whether the dissatisfaction will evolve into a full-blown internal crisis or be resolved through political negotiation remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the aftermath of the congress has opened a new chapter in the internal dynamics of the Imo APC.
