United States President Donald Trump has assured that American forces will protect vessels navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Trump made the declaration during the National Prayer Breakfast held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., on February 5, 2026, where he emphasised the United States’ commitment to safeguarding global energy supply routes.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, the President said the United States Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the critical waterway if the situation requires.
“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible,” Trump wrote.
He stressed that the United States would take all necessary measures to ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies across the world.
“No matter what, the United States will ensure the free flow of energy to the world,” he added.
As part of the measures aimed at stabilising maritime trade in the region, Trump also directed the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide risk insurance and financial guarantees for vessels operating in the area.
According to the administration, the initiative is primarily designed to protect energy shipments but will also be available to other commercial shipping companies using the route.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. It serves as the only sea passage linking the Persian Gulf to the open oceans and is a key transit route for global oil and gas exports.
Several major oil-producing nations are situated along the Gulf, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
Recent hostilities and threats reportedly issued by Iran to target vessels passing through the strait have heightened concerns in global energy markets.
The growing tensions have already triggered significant increases in global oil and gas prices, as traders and governments fear potential disruptions to one of the world’s most vital energy supply routes.
