Ugochinyere defies disruption
Emerges consensus candidate in Ideato South, commissions APP secretariat

Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday recorded a major political boost as the Ideato South Political Forum (IPF) unanimously adopted him as its consensus candidate ahead of his re-election bid.
The historic endorsement, which took place in Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, drew a massive crowd of supporters, party faithful, youths, and community leaders, underscoring Ugochinyere’s growing popularity and grassroots acceptance across the constituency.
The event, which also featured the commissioning of the Ideato South Local Government Area secretariat of the Action Peoples Party (APP), was, however, marked by alleged attempts to disrupt the gathering.
Organisers accused security operatives of firing teargas at the mammoth crowd after the original venue at Christ Anglican Church, Ntueke, was reportedly barricaded. Despite the disruption, supporters relocated to the APP secretariat, where the programme continued amid chants of solidarity.
Eyewitnesses said the teargas caused panic, with at least six women reportedly affected. However, the situation did not deter the lawmaker or his supporters, who stood their ground and went ahead with the event.
In a show of resilience, Ugochinyere addressed the crowd, insisting that no amount of intimidation would stop the people from exercising their democratic rights.
“This is our land. We have the right to gather, to speak, and to choose our leaders. No one can take that away from us,” he declared to loud cheers.
Stakeholders at the event described the adoption as a reflection of the people’s confidence in Ugochinyere’s leadership, citing his performance in the National Assembly, vocal advocacy, and commitment to constituency development.
According to the forum, the decision followed extensive consultations across communities, with a consensus that Ugochinyere remains the best candidate to continue representing the federal constituency.
“Hon. Ikenga has proven himself as a courageous and effective representative. His track record speaks volumes, and the people have resolved to stand firmly with him,” the statement read.
The commissioning of the APP secretariat was also described as a significant milestone, symbolising the strengthening structure of the party and its readiness for future political contests in the area.
Supporters at the event hailed Ugochinyere’s courage in the face of alleged intimidation, describing him as a leader who stands with his people regardless of pressure.
Political observers say the massive turnout and successful completion of the event, despite the challenges, signal a strong grassroots backing that could shape the political landscape of Ideato South ahead of the next elections.
The forum concluded by reaffirming its unwavering support for Ugochinyere, urging residents to remain united and committed to the collective political direction.
“We stand united. We stand resolute. We stand with Ikenga,” the communiqué declared.
