Imo PDP dismisses ‘mass defection’ claim

*Says party structure remains intact

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed as false a newspaper report alleging that its members are “emptying into the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the performance of Governor Hope Uzodimma.”

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lancelot Obiaku, the party described the report as a cheap publicity stunt by a few “stranded and irrelevant” politicians seeking attention and financial gain.

The PDP maintained that there has been no mass defection from its ranks, stressing that its structure across the 305 wards and 27 local government areas in the state remains strong and united, without leadership crises or internal discord.

According to the party, those who recently claimed to have defected were never committed PDP members but “transactional and mercantile interlopers” who had long been rejected by the party.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Imo State chapter, cautions the All Progressives Congress (APC) to beware of a few characters who recently claimed to have joined its platform after attempting to exploit the Imo APC stakeholders’ meeting of March 2, 2026, to regain lost relevance,” the statement read.

The party said the individuals had earlier attempted to hijack the party’s structure in some wards and local government areas during the 2024 congresses but were resisted and defeated by loyal members.

Imo PDP further warned that those who have no genuine affiliation with the party should stop using its name to create relevance for themselves.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of individuals to freely associate with any political platform, the party insisted that such actions should not be falsely linked to the PDP.

The statement added that the PDP remains focused on strengthening its structures and preparing for the 2027 general elections, noting that the recent Imo PDP Women Summit, which attracted thousands of participants, demonstrated the party’s enduring grassroots support.

The party also disclosed that it is mobilising delegates to participate in the PDP National Convention scheduled to hold in Abuja on March 29 and 30, 2026.
