Imo Assembly becomes all-APC as Minority Leaders defect

The Imo State House of Assembly has become a one-party chamber following the defection of the Minority Leader, Hon. Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie (Aboh-Mbaise), and the Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Clinton Nkemjika Amadi (Owerri Municipal), to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Both lawmakers announced their resignation from their respective parties — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) — and formally joined the APC.
Their defection effectively leaves the Imo State House of Assembly without opposition representation, with the APC now occupying all 27 seats in the legislature.
Political observers say the development further strengthens the ruling party’s dominance in the state’s political structure, while raising questions about the future of opposition politics in Imo State.
Amuchie, who represented Aboh-Mbaise as Minority Leader, and Amadi, the Deputy Minority Leader representing Owerri Municipal, were among the few remaining opposition voices in the Assembly before their move.
With their defection, the APC now holds complete control of legislative activities in the state assembly, a situation analysts say could significantly influence policy direction and political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
