It was a thunderous chorus of *“Onwa-ka-anyi ga eso”* on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the Imo Government House Hall in Owerri, the venue of Governor Hope Odidika Uzodimma, CON (Onwa Oyoko), reception for defectors into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The defectors were members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including officers of the political campaign organisation of the former National Secretary of the PDP, the Divine Mandate Movement (DMM).

Others included PDP leaders, party officers and members who had recently left the party, abandoning their positions to join the APC because of what they described as the good works of Governor Uzodimma. They were led by their pragmatic leader, Evangelist Myke Obinna Ikemsinachi Ikoku.

There was a massive show of excitement at the venue, especially with the presence of such high-profile individuals joining the APC.

Observers noted that the development could have significant implications for the PDP in Imo State, which may find it difficult to rebuild ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Those who spoke at the event, including Evangelist Myke Obinna Ikemsinachi Ikoku, Engr. Chidi Dike (former Acting Chairman of Imo PDP), Hon. Jeff Nwachukwu, Chief Jude Opara (Shapume), President of Ikeduru Country Club, Onyemauzo, Ugoeze Cecilia and Onuegbu Ugorji, all commended Governor Uzodimma for what they described as his infrastructural strides in the state. They said their decision to defect was motivated by the governor’s performance.

The defection of these leaders, who previously held strong influence within the PDP, is seen by supporters as strengthening the support base of the Imo APC in a strategic manner rarely witnessed in the state’s political history.

Governor Uzodimma, a seasoned political figure who understands the dynamics of politics and does not underestimate his opponents, warmly welcomed the defectors. He thanked them for their courage in deciding to join the APC and assured them of a level playing ground within the party.

The governor also acknowledged the positive contributions the new members are expected to bring to the APC, noting that their experience and political weight would further strengthen the party.

The coming days and weeks promise to be politically engaging as preparations and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
