2027 Imo guber: Onyedebelu’s emergence as APC Chairman raises questions

The emergence of Chief Austin Onyedebelu as the new Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State may carry deeper political implications beyond the routine outcome of a party congress.

At the APC State Congress held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, Governor Hope Uzodimma’s political message appeared clear to observers familiar with the dynamics of Imo politics.

Political commentator Sam Onwuemeodo described the development as the governor’s “handwriting on the wall,” suggesting that the decision reflects a deliberate signal about the 2027 governorship succession.

Drawing an analogy from the biblical story of King Belshazzar in the Book of Daniel, where mysterious words appeared on the wall during a feast, Onwuemeodo argued that unlike the cryptic “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin,” Uzodimma’s message required no interpreter.

According to him, the replacement of the outgoing APC chairman, Dr. Macdonald Ebere from Owerri Zone, with Onyedebelu from Oru East Local Government Area of Orlu Zone — the same zone as the governor — speaks volumes about the political direction of the ruling party in the state.

Observers note that in Imo’s political history, the zoning of the ruling party’s chairmanship has often hinted at where the governorship may shift in the future.

Onwuemeodo argued that if Ebere had remained chairman, it might have strengthened expectations that the governorship would not move to Owerri Zone in 2027. Instead, the selection of Onyedebelu from Orlu Zone suggests a different political calculation.

Onyedebelu, who is the Managing Director of the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), now assumes leadership of the party structure in the state.

The move, analysts say, reflects the governor’s strategy to consolidate political control and ensure trusted leadership within the party as the state gradually approaches the next election cycle.

For many political watchers, the decision could reshape the ongoing debate around the Imo Charter of Equity — the widely discussed arrangement advocating rotation of the governorship among the state’s three senatorial zones: Orlu, Owerri and Okigwe.

Whether the development strengthens or weakens the argument for zoning the 2027 governorship remains a matter of interpretation. However, it has certainly sparked fresh conversations within the state’s political circles.

As the political permutations continue, the APC congress outcome has left many stakeholders reading what they believe to be the governor’s message — his own “handwriting on the wall” for Imo’s political future.
