It is often said that charity begins at home. The saying derives its strength from the belief that whatever one does, he must not forget his nativity. However, one man who strongly believes in this is Chief Sam Anokam. A refined Owerri based estate surveyor and a native of Umuchima Ihiagwa in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. Anoka’s
tremendous contributions towards the development of his community are second to none.
Though not the only wealthy man in Ihiagwa community, but the kind of love and concern he has shown to the affairs of his people rarely come by. At a time it mattered most, Anokam took the bull by the horn by ensuring that the land that belongs to his community which was encroached upon by the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) was reclaimed by the host communities comprising Ihiagwa, Dindi Ihiagwa, Umuanunu, Umuoma Nekede, Obinze and Avu.
It was a journey Anokam began many years ago. After a series of meetings with the then Minister of Power, Housing and Works, Babatunde Fashola, Imo State government and other relevant bodies; victory was achieved. Today, Anokam is extremely happy for recording that feat by getting what belongs to his people and community single-handedly.
As the attorney of the FUTO communities, Anokam has indeed put a smile on the faces of the people out of unconditional love and magnanimity.
No wonder, Sam Anokam is a household name today in Ihiagwa owing to his tremendous contributions towards the progress and development of his community. He is not a political office holder but he has proven to his people that some people who are not political office holders can as well contribute their quoter to developing and organising the community. He has gone the extra mile in inaugurating a group of youths from the six communities that make up the host communities as Aroche Youth Ambassadors. The primary objective is to stop unplanned and illegal structure and make sure that nobody encroaches on the land again. This is in addition to assisting many families and empowering youths.
Anoka’s kind is rare in a generation. Ihiagwa and environs are surely blessed to have him, for in him they have the best. Ride on, a man of the people.
