Elected officials, stakeholders battle over Apex leadership

The planned reception of Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma by  Imo West Senatorial district (Owerri Zone) seems to be generating a lot of power tussle over who are the authentic leaders of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the zone.

Reportedly, some of the party’s stakeholders in the zone had appointed Chief Charles Amadi to head the committee for the reception. His nomination, however, has been criticized by the party’s stakeholders who felt that Amadi is unfit to head the committee and have since been wagging media war against his nomination.

According to our source, Amadi was nominated by Chief Lemmy Akakem, who is seen as one of the stakeholders of APC in Owerri zone. However, it was gathered that elected officials from the zone are not comfortable with some of the stakeholders who assumed the leadership positions in the zone.

Edge Express gathered that the elected officials recently gathered at the office of the Deputy Governor as their Apex leader. They, however, insisted that other stakeholders must queue behind them.

One of the lawmakers according to our source wondered why those who are claiming to be leaders of the party in the zone could not even deliver any of the booths to APC during the last general elections, but lost to other political parties. He said the era of claiming leadership by name dropping is over, insisting that those who are ready to deliver on the APC manifesto should be seen as the true leaders of the party and not those who have nothing to offer to the people.

According to one of the lawmakers, “the only Apex leader we have in Owerri zone is the Deputy Governor, Prof. Placid Njoku. By hierarchy, after him, you get Uche Ogbuagu who is the Majority Leader, followed by Eddy Obinna, Sam Otuibe, and Kanayo Onyemaechi.

“We are the only five elected persons. But because we cannot do it alone, we need to carry everybody along, but not them being ahead of us. There is no other Apex leader in Owerri zone apart from the Deputy Governor. For instance, Rochas Okorocha cannot assume the Apex leader of the party when Uzodimma is the sitting governor from APC too.

“If those who are claiming Apex leadership were so powerful, they could have delivered their polling booths, wards, and LGAs to Governor Uzodimma. The same elected officials they are saying should be under them won them in their various polling booths, so what’s the noise all about? “Whoever that does not respect lawfully elected persons is lawless and as such should not be allowed to occupy any position of public trust. It is pertinent that all should queue behind the elected officers and refrain from acts which tend to bring divisions in the party.”
