Top management staff in the Ministry of Environment, Imo State namely Mrs. Sabina Onwuchi (Acting Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment) and Mr. Chukwuma Iheanacho a deputy director in the Ecology Department,) have threatened to drag Edge Express Newspaper to court over a news report published by the media house in the Monday, September 28, 2020 edition.
According to a letter from Ihunanya Udeagwu ESQ of Oracle Chambers who claimed to be writing for and on behalf of the above-mentioned Environment Ministry staff, should the media house fail to apologize and retract the said publication within fourteen (14) days, they will set the necessary legal machineries in motion.
However, Edge Express management is of the view that the Acting Permanent Secretary was given the opportunity to react to the publication in a professional manner but she rather displayed uncultured behaviour towards the reporter when she was contacted.
While it should be noted that Edge Express would not intentionally wish to cause irreparable and irredeemable loss to anyone’s reputation, let it be known that in accordance with the vision of the media house to be objective in reportage, no amount of threat would stop us from carrying out investigative duties of the journalism profession as we are seen as the watchdog of the society.
Recall that there have been series of confirmed anomalies going on in the Ministry spearheaded by the management staff of the ministry. There have been calls by many interest groups urging the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma to look inward and discipline those behind the mismanagement of public trust in the Ministry, as the situation at the Ministry needs an objective , urgent, purposeful and decisive action to nip it in the bud before it escalates.
