Apart from cutting down trees for personal aggrandizement and to the detriment of the state by foresters at the zoo believed to have the backing of the top management staff of the Ministry of Environment, it has been revealed that part of the Zoo was shared by the management staff of the Ministry to their cronies for farming purposes. A situation that has exposed the zoo to intruders, criminals, and land-grabbers.
Our source, also alleged that the incessant encroachment of the zoo was precipitated by the deforestation against government directives.
More so the Zoo quarters meant for staff are being occupied by cronies and relatives of top members of the management staff of the ministry. A situation one of the staff described as unfortunate, discouraging, and irrational.
This and many other scandals rocking the Ministry, according to our sources is the reason behind Governor Hope Uzodimma’s directive to move the management of the zoo from Environment Ministry to Tourism Ministry.
Meanwhile, the Environment Ministry is not happy with the directive and is applying delay tactics in the handing over of the zoo to Tourism Ministry as directed by the governor.
Recall that Environment Ministry has been in the news for the wrong reason and is rated the worst in the present administration. Its activities have not been in tandem with the Shared Prosperity government of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
There was also a call for the sack of the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Dr. Ikechukwu Njoku over the removal of NEWMAP coordinator and his plan to replace him with his protégé. An attempt the World Bank rejected vehemently.
