The Director of Environmental Health, Abia state Ministry of Environment, Mr Ike Uche has said that the Abia State government has completed plans to desilt Aba, Umuahia and environs to avoid flooding.
Mr Uche who made the disclosure in Umuahia, while chatting with newsmen after the monthly clean-up exercise decried the attitude of some residents who use the drainage as a refuse dump during the rains, contributing to the blockage thereby not allowing easy flow of water.
On the enforcement of the environmental laws on the defaulters who play football, trading and loitering during the cleanup exercise, he said that enforcement agents have been advised to arrest and prosecute offenders. He added that “people have been brought to court today and you can see that they are being tried for environmental offences and will be penalized accordingly.”
On the success of this month’s clean up exercise, he said there is room for improvement noting that the exercise is operational.
“According to him, “we are working on the operational method and to have a necessary backing since we have all that it takes.
However, he encouraged people who embark on desilting of their drainage by themselves and urged them to always liaise with his ministry for the evacuation of the refuse scooped from the drainage.
Sequel to this trader at the Amuzukwu relief market who were relocated from Isi gate has threatened to come back to Isi gate if the trading going on at Bonny street by Owerri road and Cameroon road by Owerri road is not stopped immediately by the state government.
