The Commissioner for Transport, Imo State, Barr. Rex Anunobi, has stated the readiness of the Ministry of Transport under his watch to partner effectively with other stakeholders towards promoting public safety.
Barr. Anunobi who stated this when the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Safety, Hon. Ugochukwu Nzekwe paid him a courtesy visit in his office at the State Secretariat, Port Harcourt road, Owerri, maintained that issues of public safety and security of lives remain paramount hence all stakeholders must close ranks to handle them carefully in the overall interest of the government and the people.
Speaking further on Public Safety as it affects the transportation sector, Barr. Anunobi said the Ministry of Transport is working tirelessly in line with the Shared Prosperity vision and mission of Gov. Hope Uzodimma to revive, reposition and effectively manage the ‘Commuter Manifest Scheme.’ This is to enable it to serve the greater purposes of safety, security and compensation of accident victims whenever it occurs as established by the law of Imo State House of Assembly.
While expressing reservation on the ‘proxy’ approach to obtaining ‘Vehicle Road Worthiness’ without subjecting vehicles to mechanical and another necessary test before issuing Certificate of Road Worthiness, the Commissioner disclosed that his Ministry has to that effect made recommendations to the Governor and the State Executive Council towards keying into automated vehicle inspection as obtained in some states to purposefully ensure safety as well as generate improved revenue for the state.
Earlier in his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Safety, Hon. Ugochukwu said his office identifies Ministry of Transport as a partner on issues of Public Safety, a situation he said calls for partnership, purposeful collaboration and synergy.
He pledged to support the Commissioner and the Ministry of Transport in areas of Public Safety to ensure that the government succeeds in protecting lives and property in the state.
