Okigwe Senate APC ticket: opinion poll favours Achonu

Athan Achonu

There are clear indications that Senator Athan Achonu would emerge the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the forthcoming primaries of the party, for Okigwe Senate bye-election.
According to an opinion poll conducted by Edge Express, the APC primaries might be a straight fight between Ararume and Athan Achonu. The two men having as expected cleared the screening hurdle, appears to have put all structures in place for the primaries in all the local government areas of the state contrary to some other aspirants who are lacking presence even in their own local areas. Senator Achonu is also said to have gotten serious endorsement of big party chieftains and influential appointees as well as power brokers close to Governor Hope Uzodimma. Apart from deep pockets, both aspirants appears to have loyal and influential followership which cuts across the 64 wards in the zone. It was further observes that in the final analysis that pro-government elements would rather go for Achonu who is more pro-Uzodimma, less ambitious to be Governor in 2024 and who can independently fight the Senate elections.
One of the interviewer, told Edge Express, “representing over two million people from 6 local government areas is not a party cake. It requires experience, acceptability, bravery and intelligence. In fact a Senator must be ready from the first hour. Senator Athan Achonu is not only prepared for the unique task of representing Okigwe zone, but has shown from his 5 months stint in the Senate that he is ready for any obstacle that might come with the task. As a first time Senator in 2015, Senator Achonu not only initiated 4 solid bills, but contributed his quota towards ameliorating the deplorable state of infrastructure in the zone by making sure that so many roads across the zone were captured in the NDDC project scheme. It was unfortunate that no solid effort was made to push those captured projects further. In fact within 3 months of his stay in the Senate, he became a house hold name in the Senate. That’s the kind man for Okigwe Senate. He is a child of destiny, it can be delayed but cannot be denied.”
