The Imo State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Tuesday inaugurated the State Organizing Committee to handle football competitions among its youths in the local governments of the state.
The State Chairman of the party and one time Minister of Commerce and Industry, Engr. Charles Ugwuh inaugurated the 13 member Committee in the company of other state executive committee members.
He charged them to make the competition very glamorous and the envy of others even as he warned them against any form of bickering. Ugwuh reminded the youths that football is a great marketing tool and a great opportunity they can utilize to grow their careers. He promised that the party would put resources in the venture.
Nze Ray Emeana, the State Secretary speaking, remarked that this is the first time a political party is floating a football tournament. He charged the Committee to set clear standards and eschew the temptations of shifting the goal posts at the middle of the game.
He urged the local government chairmen to take charge because according to him “this is your project and you will be held responsible if anything goes wrong.” The chief scribe advised them to work closely with the youths.
Emeana also noted that “if we turn it to a successful crowd event, it becomes a strong motivational tool. We can also harvest talents for exports that will be marketable outside the state.”
The Deputy Chairman of the party, Sir Martin Ejiogu, warned the participants to avoid all forms of distractions that may come from the opposition adding that it should not be seen as money making venture nor be hijacked for personal gains. He noted that the tournament could be used to harness budding talents at the grassroots.
The State Youth Leader, Greg Nwadike explained that they have long muted the idea and only needed the state officials to give it their blessings and official recognition.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Kelechi Eke promised that his team will deliver. In his words, “we will make it a huge success, we will make it the envy of all, we will bring our expertise, and we will bring scouts to fish out hidden talents. Those who thought out this have a good direction I ask for your support.”
