Gov. Uzodimma’s praiseworthy rehabilitation of roads

One of the major challenges confronting the economic development of Imo State has been the lack of quality roads across the 3 zones of the state. The negative effects of this on vehicular movement are enormous. Many of our rural communities are suffering from inadequate road infrastructure with the consequence that most agricultural commodities from the rural areas hardly find their way into the urban areas. This has also caused most of the rural farmers to produce only on subsistence level and young people emigrate into the urban area for greener pastures.
However, on assumption of office, Governor Hope Uzodimma made it clear that his administration would be guided by the 3R policy thrust of Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of which the fruits have been evident in roads rehabilitation. Some of the roads that have been rehabilitated include, Port Harcourt road, Chukwuma Nwoha, Douglas, Control Post area, etc.
It is a good policy to rehabilitate dilapidated roads rather than constructing new ones. Added to all these is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and Julius Berger Construction Company, which, when finalized would lead to full rehabilitation of Owerri-Orlu road and Owerri-Okigwe road. Edge Express newspaper appreciates the governor for his philosophy of giving the state a face-lift through improved road network.
We also call on the governor not to limit this rehabilitation of roads to the capital city, but to extend it to Orlu and Okigwe. Again, we would like the rehabilitated roads to be of durable standard, just as the Deputy Governor, Prof. Placid Njoku had earlier promised.
Edge Express newspaper is also encouraging the state government to make use of this period of August break to ensure that as many outstanding roads under the process of rehabilitation are completed before the rains begin again. Likewise, such roads as the Naze-Nekede-Ihiagwa-Obinze road which is host to many federal establishments. The road leading to Relief Market from MCC road also needs urgent attention and many more.
As said above, the governor should ensure that quality standards are strictly observed in all construction works. Once again, we say to the governor, more grease to your elbows as we continue to expect more rehabilitated roads which are bound to have multiplier effects on the state’s economic wellbeing.
Finally, Edge Express newspaper is calling on the governor to take advantage of his unique place as the only APC governor in the South East to draw the attention of the federal government to the poor state of the federal roads in our state and the South East as a whole. Such roads include the Owerri-Aba road and the Owerri-Umuahia road.
