School reopening: SCIN raises concern over safety of students

A group, South East Coronavirus Intervention Network (SCIN) has urged parents and guardians to pay adequate attention to the health of their children and wards amidst the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. This was as the group warned that the move by some state governments to reopen schools may jeopardize efforts made towards combating the spread of the dreaded virus. The group stated this during its awareness campaign cum outreach programme to Ezi Irete Community in Oru-West Council Area of Imo State recently.Speaking at the visit the group led by Miss Chioma Egbuagha said there is no concrete evidence on ground that would guarantee the safety of the students, teachers and other members of the school community on resumption.Mr. Collins Osuji, SCIN Media Analyst, Imo State, who represented the Coordinator of SCIN, Nze Meekam Mgbenwulu also urged the leaders of the community, including the Traditional Ruler, village chiefs, religious heads, women and youth leaders to partner in efforts aimed at ensuring general welfare and safety of the people.Equally, Juliet Oguekusi, Health Analyst and Uju Odette Data Analyst of the group also reiterated on the need for strict compliance to the precautionary measures recommended by the World Health Organization, NCDC and other health experts on Covid-19.They also guided the people on several health tips including the seven steps for effective hand washing, as well as cautioned them against giving in to misconceptions and misinformation regarding the virus.Responding on behalf of the community, the Traditional Ruler, HRH Eze Uzoma Joseph Ibe (Ezi 1 of Ezi Irete) , Prof R. U. Ononogbo (Traditional Prime Minister), Chief Barrister C. N Metu (President General), Chief Emma Ogbonna (Secretary General) and others commended SCIN for the visit and promised to enhance their commitment in fighting the disease in their community.Highlights of the event was the distribution of face masks, soaps and hand sanitizers to all the community leaders present and the demonstrations of the seven steps for effective hand washing.
