The Imo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised an alarm over an alleged plot by the ruling government to goad the traditional rulers in the state to lead a protest action against those challenging the authenticity of governor Uzodimma’s mandate.
They made the disclosure last Friday in a press briefing which took place at the Okigwe Road of the party secretariat.
In the briefing addressed by the party chairman, Sir Martin Ejiogu, the opposition party expressed deep concern that the planned action will not only ridicule the natural rulers but will turn Imo to a laughing stock.
An excerpt of the statement reads, ”this time around, it is about the abnormal decision by the regime to coerce the traditional institution, comprising the royal fathers, to embark on an unbefitting and unedifying public protest over the ordeals and travails of the current regime in the hands of various entities, who has found reasons to challenge the legitimacy of the current regime to remain in office of the governor of Imo State.
“We feel our royal fathers must not be coerced and compelled into such conduct as public protest for a matter that is purely that of Senator Hope Uzodimma, that is capable of bringing shame and disgrace not only to them but also to the state.”
The Chairman further queried the government of Uzodimma to explain to Imolites what it has done with N175.7billion representing total funds received as income by the administration since inception from federal allocations for state and local governments, loans, savings from ghost workers and pensioners as well as the internally generated revenue (IGR)
Another excerpt reads” it is not clear whether the money has been utilized. It is also not known what the money has been utilized for, if it has been utilized. This is at the backdrop of the fact that till date the basic responsibility of governance in Imo State, which is payment of salaries, has remained mission impossible for this regime.”
In his explanations, he explained that PDP is not the problem of the governor. ”He is the problem because he doesn’t know what he is doing. PDP is not in charge of the government house, he is not paying salaries and pensions, instead our money is being shifted to Abuja where he is paying his cronies who put him in that government house”, Ejiogu stated further.
The State Secretary of the party, Ray Emeana, while thanking the media for lending their support so far, stated that the political party in opposition has the responsibility to hold the government in power accountable.
