NURTW withdraws patronship from Okafor over displacement of members

National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has withdrawn the appointment given to Imo Park Manager, Chief Ifeanyi Okafor as the patron of the union in zone one council. Zone one comprises of Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia among others.
In an advertorial made available to Edge Express, dated 30th June, 2020, addressed to Chief Sir Ifeanyi Okafor(Akaekpuchionwa) of No. 16 Haritex Street, New Owerri,Imo State, signed by the zonal chairman, Chief Augustine Udeazor and zonal secretary, Comrade Charles Nweke, which was copied to the National Vice-President, High Chief Sunny Nwakodo and all States Chairmen as well as Secretaries, the union cited breach of agreement, displacement of members and handing over Imo parks to contractors on ‘cash and carry’ basis as the reason for withdrawing the patronship given to him following his appointment by Governor Uzodinma as Imo Park Manager.
The letter further stated “In view of the foregoing and with the proven fact that you cannot protect the interest of union members in Imo State, the zone one council of the union have resolved to withdraw your appointment as zonal patron with immediate effect.”
Recall, that Imo State Chairman of the union, Comrade Izuchukwu Bora, had protested via letter to the State Chairman of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) alleging that 25,000 members of the union were sacked by Okafor few days after his appointment as Imo Park Manager.
Subsequently, a meeting was convened courtesy of Imo Commissioner for Transport, Barr. Rex Anunobi aimed at restoring peace. Imo Park Manager, Okafor, however, denied sacking 25,000 members of the union. Since then there have been series of claims and counter claims.
Tongues are wagging that he (Okafor) handed over Imo parks to Anambra contractors who paid between N500, 000 to N1, 000000, which he has denied. Meanwhile, Imolites have call on stakeholders in the transport sector, the labour union leaders as well as the state governor to look into the matter with the aim of resolving it and restoring lasting peace.
