Imo: Do we have leaders who can take a risk and make sacrifice?

Hope Uzodimma

In lmo State, political Leadership has been seriously constrained by corruption, electoral fraud, mismanagement of resources and poor infrastructural development. These factors have been hamstringing the institutionalization of good governance in the state by successive governments.
The quest for quality leadership and good governance have been the aspiration of Imolites. This is because the task of harnessing scarce resources in pursuit for human development is related to the quality and output of leadership. The history of the development of great societies is directly proportional to the sacrificial and contributory roles of leaders in the transformation of such society.
One of the defining qualities of great leadership is sacrifice. In leadership theory, sacrifice is the fundamental alchemy and critical characterizations of great leadership. Without much distortions, sacrifice remains one of the basic principles of great Leadership. In measured proportion, great leaders are said to demonstrate bold judgement and assertive reasoning with intrepid mind.
To General George Patton, the most underlining quality of a great leader is the ability and willingness to make bold sacrifice by daring the consequences. There are many who have Leadership inscription but cannot wealter the storm and stand in their struggle. Truely leadership requires great men and women to bring all the boldness, audacity, toughness and determination they can summon. According to Carl Von Clausewitz “If a leader is filled with high ambition for sacrifice and pursues his aims with audacity and strength of will, he will achieve them inspite of any obstacle”. Also, Robert Greene in one of his books observed that “great leaders do not wait for coronation, rather they crown themselves through strength and audacity to make sacrifice”. Great Leaders always develop the nerve and confidence which provide a driving force to dare and surmount any centrifugal force without looking back. Sacrifice has remained the essential precepts which today’s leaders are lacking in this 21st century. No society make any progressive impact in leadership without the involvement of leaders with the zeal for sacrifice.
In this revolutionary age of blistering change, the society requires leaders with great deal of audacity and self-determination.
It is an incontrovertible fact that one of the major challenges of good leadership in the state today is lack of men of strong-will who are determined to make selfless sacrifices for the sake of our generation. Leaders who have the audacity and ability to say NO to the parasitic godfathers and political oligarchs who have turned the state into their enterprise. Who fete from our common patrimony in the name of “settlement”. Huge amount of money goes to the drain on monthly basis use to massage the pot bellies of some of the godfathers.
The future of the state seems to be trapped in the debris of hopelessness predicated on psychopathic Leadership. Imo state appears to be driven by the obsolete engine of moribund Leadership making sustainable development and genuine progress elusive. The future of the state can only give birth to better visions, ideas, and excellent deliveries with leaders of selfless mind . With men of goodwill, the future of the state will engender the pursuit of what ought to be, the alliance of better and fresher ideas against the current norms of accelerating backwards with shame.
With leaders of conscience the future will discover our best potentials and offer salvation to our trapped system.
It is really unfortunate that we lack real leaders who can take a risk and sacrifice for the state selflessly. We have only politicians whose grand interest is to loot the state dry. Politicians who are ever ready to subjugate and subject the people to untold hardship, politicians who cannot pay salaries and pensions despite the resources accruable to the state. This is the height of wickedness which God cannot forget.
In this era of globalization and rapid flow of ideas, Imo State needs leaders with selfless spirit, leaders with exponentially profound ideas of unparalleled distinction, leaders with courage and defining modus for leadership excellence and good governance, leaders with vision percieve the future and the zeal to affect the future.
For instance, in USA, Abraham Lincoln stands out because of his sacrificial leadership and leading roles during the 1861-1865 American Civil war which led to the preservation of the union, institutionalization of democratic concept and abolition of slavery. Lincoln left an enduring legacy being upheld today in US as a good model of democracy and good governance. America did not become a great nation over night or by accident rather she was nurtured into greatness by the sacrificial roles of her leaders.
The history of Russia offers yet another example of sacrificial roles of patriotic leaders in nation building. Before 1917 Russia could not manufacture a bicycle, but today Russia is competing favorably with the USA for the first position as the most powerful and developed country of the world. This is attributable to the sacrificial role of Lenin and Stalin. Without Lenin, the great Bolshevik revolution of 1917 which transformed Russia into a super power would not have come to fruition.
Also, the story of how Cuba was turned from the quagmire of poverty, ignorance and disease into a haven of affluence and contentment can be attributed to the patriotic sacrifices of Fidel Castro who fast-tracked Cuba to the path of the sociopolitical development and National progress.
Also, the unification of the East and West Germany could be credited to Otto Von Bismarck, one of the outstanding and significant political leaders in German history. His efforts were fast-tracked by Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who ensured the enthronement of a federal system of government in a unified federal Representative of Germany in 1990. This was considered cardinal to a stable constitutional democracy in Germany.
In China, Muo Tse-Tung set the stage that transformed China from a crawling economy to a stable economic giant in the world. Today, China has the fastest growing economy in the world with an average annual growth rate of 9%.
What about Nelson Mandela of South Africa who hold sway as one of the greatest figure of black emancipation with his history of anti-apartheid struggle. His exemplary leadership steered South Africa to a sustainable development and democratic ideals epitomized by smooth political transition.
