Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has been described as a leader who has the best of intention for Imolites.
Making the statement at the weekend is Cajetan Duke, the Director General of Imo All Progressives Congress (APC) Media Centre, when he led his team to pay a courtesy call on the Edge Express newspaper
In his speech, he described the governor as quite accommodating and would never like to waste the resources of the state. He explained that the governor is mindful of the scarce resources of the state.
In his words, ”our governor has shown capacity by inheriting past contracts with the realization that government is a continuum, cancelling previous jobs would amount to wasting the tax payers money.”
Duke maintained that his Media Centre is a strategic one in which they have taken their destiny in their hands to tell their own stories their own way instead of allowing the opposition to do the narratives.
The director-general further stated that he identified the need to partner with media organizations and the media entrepreneurs because the party recognized them as critical stakeholders who should drive the message from the government.
”We are not asking you to drop your editorial policy nor skew your editorial content in our favour, we are only asking for a level of balancing in terms of reportage. If your editorial content is tailored towards the opposition the public will tend to believe them. Again, if the government programme is under reported people will be denied knowledge of government’s performance,” he pleaded.
He commended the Publisher, Mr. Jotham Emenyonu and his team for the good works they are doing through the paper which he said is gradually taking over the media space in Imo.
In his response, Emenyonu expressed appreciation for their initiative to visit and identify with media organizations as critical partners, an action he described as the first of its kind by any party in recent times. He assured them of his co-operation to support them.
According to him, ”we have been reporting APC fairly and we owe a duty to the general public to do what is right. As long as I remain the CEO of this paper, I will try to accommodate every interest. We are not here to defend the government but to serve the needs of our target audience. We will support your cause.’’
In his remarks, the group editor, Afam Echi, appealed to the visitors to open up the media space by making the party and the government accessible to the public. This he explained can be achieved by availing the media organizations of the contacts of key government functionaries such as the Commissioners, the Council Chairmen, heads of agencies and parastatals etc. He advised the team to shun the same practice they condemn in the opposition.
The DG expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded him and promised to promote
