The media assistant to Dr Ikechukwu Njoku, Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment, Bright Eluagu, has stated that the ministry presently has recorded unprecedented developments against what it used to be in the past.
Eluagu, who was reacting to an article written article on page 6 of EDGE EXPRESS NEWSPAPER, Monday, June 8th edition, with the caption,” IS IMO STATE COMMISSIONER FOR ENVIRONMENT WATCHING OR WORKING”, by a guest writer, Chucks Nwokeji, stated “ordinarily, we would have ignored such litany of lies and fictional postulations of Nwokeji, but, for the purpose of clarity, it is important for us to state the facts plainly, on some of the myopic issues he raised in that malicious article.
“First, he ignorantly asked if the performing Commissioner for Environment is watching or working? This question is not just laughable but irresponsible especially, coming from a supposed trained journalist, who should have been abreast with the tremendous achievements of Dr Ikechukwu Njoku, as the Hon Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment, since he assumed office.
“The Imo State Ministry of Petroleum and Environment, under the able leadership of Dr Ikechukwu Njoku has performed beyound expectations.
“It is on record that the Commissioner works tirelessly everyday in order to achieve the 3R mantra of the present administration, ably led by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.
“Dr Njoku has met on several occasions, the relevant stakeholders in the environment sector. He has equally visited environmental sites in order to have an impact assessment knowledge on such sites.
“Worried by the activities of illicit dredging and mining within the state capital, Dr Ikechukwu Njoku visited the Nworie River and sand excavation site, in order to stop the environmental hazards caused by indiscriminate mining activies going on there and to also preserve and protect the state from any form of environmental degradation and ecological problems.
“It is also a known fact that Imo State is now wearing a new look as a result of the regular sanitation that takes place in Owerri and its environ.
“Dr Njoku has also identified some critical environmental areas within the capital city, for immediate attention and rehabilitation.
“Just recently, during the world environment day, the Commissioner called on Imo people to assist the state government in protecting the environment and avoid actions that could poise a serious threat and danger to a healthy environment.
“As a pragmatic and digital commissioner, he banned all forms of mining in the state capital in order to protect the state’s environment.
“One, now wonders where Mr Chucks Nwokeji got his information from or is he trying to seek abysmal media relevance.
“It is equally necessary to inform Nwokeji that Dr Ikechukwu Njoku is a press friendly commissioner.
“Every registered Journalist in Imo State knows him as a friendly political leader who picks calls and reponse to text messages.
“We therefore enjoin the public to disregard the stomach motivated rantings of Chucks Nwokeji as all he stated against the performing Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment are false and aimed at achieving a selfish political gain.
“Conclusively, no amount of blackmail will deter Dr Njoku from working to realize the 3R mantra of the present administration led by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma. “
