PDP alleges secret plot to remand Nwaogwugwu in prison foiled

The Imo State branch of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that a clandestine arrangement to arraign and remand its detained Director of New Media, Ambrose Nwaogwugu has been foiled.

The party made the allegation at the weekend in a Press Statement signed by its State Acting Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ogubundu Nwadike, which it issued to media houses and availed the Edge Express newspaper.

The release had alleged that the Directorate of State Security (DSS) had perfected plans with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Imo State, standing on behalf of the Attorney General of Imo State to arraign Comrade Nwaogwugwu and remand him to prison without legal representation.

The plot however, according to the statement failed as the vigilant Imo PDP leadership and their legal team shocked them with their strong presence and vigorous defence on behalf of Comrade Nwaogwugwu.

It was gathered from the release that the reason for the eight days detention of Comrade Nwaogwugwu so far was on the allegation that he made facebook posts that they alleged defamed the character of Senator Hope Uzodinma.

Seeing that the charges of using Facebook posts to defame Senator Uzodinma would not guarantee them an express order to remand Nwaogwugwu to prison, the Publicity Secretary indicated that the governor slammed a terrorism charge in Count Six of the Charge, for merely criticizing his government.

Excerpts from the statement reads, ”the plans to label Comrade Nwaogwugwu with terrorism charges in order to secure a remand order was foiled by Counsels to Nwaogwugwu who objected to the arraignment of Nwaogwugwu over alleged terrorism act. With the charges read and plea taken, the defence Counsel made an application for bail, which the Director of Public Prosecutions objected to.

“After exchange of arguments, the Court adjourned the matter for ruling on decision to grant Comrade Nwaogwugwu bail. The Defendant was however returned to the DSS detention facility until the adjourned date, June 19, 2020.

“It will be recalled that Imo PDP had raised alarm over the continued detention of Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu without granting him access to his lawyers or relations. Imo PDP had also made moves through the Federal High Court to compel the Imo State Director of DSS to produce Nwaogwugwu before the Court and to show cause why he should not be granted bail.

“It was in reaction to the coordinated action by the Imo PDP and his lawyers that the DSS and the government of Imo State now hurriedly moved Comrade Nwaogwugwu to Court to be secretly tried and remanded in prison custody. The same DSS that refused him access to his lawyers did not deem it necessary to give notice of arraignment of a Nigerian citizen, all in their desperate bid to secure his remand in prison custody without legal representation.” Finally, the release thanked the Imo public for trooping to the Court en masse to foil the alleged secret trial of Nwaogwugwu promising that a crack team of lawyers has been assembled to handle the matter.
