Don’t divide Nigerians with religion, tribal sentiments, Sarkin Imo tells politicians

Coat of Arm

A passionate appeal has been made to political leaders in Nigeria to shun discriminative utterances and unpatriotic behavioral manifestations that divide Nigerian citizens across ethnic and religious lines as such things have done more harm than good to the country.

The appeal was made by the Traditional ruler of Hausa Community in Imo State,(Sarkin Imo) Alhaji, Awwal Baba Suleiman while fielding questions from newsmen in Owerri.

Alhaji Baba Suleiman urged the political leaders to always consider overriding public interest and endevour to make issues that promote peaceful co-existence, harmonious relationship and progress of the country their top most priority.

The traditional ruler expressed deep concern that leaders have not deemed it fit to consider that sentimental and impressionistic issues bordering on religion, ethnicity or tribalism have done more harm than good to the unity of Nigeria and peaceful co-existence of her people.

Concerned about peaceful and progressive Nigeria, he called on both the leaders and the masses to have a change of attitude for the betterment of the country.

He is of the view that in order to truly move the country forward with the spirit of unity, both the leadership class and the masses should think and take Nigeria first above selfish, tribal or parochial interest.

However; he did not heap the blame only on the leaders alone, as he also cautioned the masses to stop giving unmerited support to political leaders and political office holders, stating that such sycophantic praises have done more harm than good.

The young and energetic traditional ruler noted that the masses cannot be exempted from the problem of bad leadership slowing the pace of development in the country because they have always considered peanuts as gifts and sold their conscience and future to the wrong people.

He frowned at sycophantic praises, stating that unmerited support from the masses to politicians and political office holders without sound character and outstanding leadership qualities has been the major cause of bad leadership in Nigeria.

In what could be described as a sincere, sensitive and selfless observation, he noted that the masses have sold their right through inducement by accepting gifts that impoverish them at last from politicians, adding that temporary and meaningless offers have been used to induce the people or lured them into supporting the wrong people into elective position.

His words; the masses should be blamed, for the kind of leaders they allow, l remember in those days criteria for chosen leaders were based on potentials, capacity, as tested and trusted hands but now massive support from the masses are based on poor and deceptive gifts from politicians and other inducements’

Alhaji Baba Sulieman who graduated from FUTO from the Department of Micro Biology    frowned against poor attitude of some political office holders on the people who elected them into office as well as their inability to render quality services to the people and society at large.

Reacting to news making the rounds about inflocks of Alma Jiri in Imo State, he described it as baseless and emanating from agents of disunity and enemies of peaceful coexistence.

His words, there is no single Almajiri in Imo State, we don’t even have Almajiri school in Imo State, we are not also acquired any land to build central mosque with Islamic centre, these information should be treated as rumour and be discarded’

He called on the journalists to always verify their information before publishing, he also cautioned the people to stop spreading falsehood as it has the tendency to destroy peace and unity in the state.

The monarch said’ ‘we are harsh in promoting peace and unity in Imo State, if there is any hidden agenda against peace of the state  from Hausa Community I will be the first to raise alarm and I will be the first to hand over those behind it to the state government’ Sarkin Imo concluded by admonishing the ruling class to learn a big lesson from the dreaded COVID 19 which affected both the poor and the rich, saying ‘if the political class destroy this country it’s negative effect will touch both the rich and the poor, but if they make selfless sacrifice to do the right thing for the betterment of all, its positive effects will also affect both the rich and the poor’
