Aspirants in disarray over Uzodinma’s silence

The continued silence of Governor Hope Uzodinma over his preferred candidate for the bye election of the Okigwe Senatorial Zone is worrying a cross section of political analysts, in and outside Imo State.

Recently, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state said it was going to make a categorical statement on it but up till now nothing has been said in regard to it.

When the rumour mill started grinding that the governor was backing the Secretary to Government (SGI) Chief Comas Iwu the number one citizen in the state denied it.

Since the lockdown and partial lockdown the silence on the issues is worrying. This has led to many political analysts and watchers to speculate that among the top contenders which include Senator Ifeanyi Araraume who has occupied the coveted seat twice for the Zone; Chikwem Onuoha, Eze Okoro, Chidinma Uwajumogu, the late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu’s sister, among other contenders, the governor must prefer one.

Nevertheless, the people of Onuimo Local Government in some sponsored advertorials in some newspapers have chronicled how other local governments in the zone starting from Ehime Mbano Local Government, with the late Senator Emeka Echeruo has occupied the seat twice, including the little stint Senator Athan Acholonu had before he lost the seat to the late Uwajumogu, in a rerun.

Following the turn of events, there is absolute concern on who the governor’s preferred candidate is.

Again, the people of Okigwe Zone who have lost their senator and temporary representation in the upper chamber since last November 2019, are very sad indeed that the seat is still vacant, before the unfortunate outbreak of the coronavirus shortly after the interment of the late Uwajumogu.

The development has set the zone backward unimaginably leading the people to losing the goodies that go with effective representation at the Red Chamber and the dividends of the 9th National Assembly. The national electoral body should hasten up on the Okigwe Zone seat bye-election with the progressing relaxing of the lockdown to extricate the people from the continued unending representation at the Senate. The earlier Governor Uzodinma steps into the impasse the better for the zone.
