The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called for the review of the activities of the Local Government Service Commission. This is contained in a statement jointly signed by its chairman, comrade Richard Eze, and Publicity Secretary/Public Relations Officer, comrade Charles Ebem Njoku respectively, and availed Edge Express. The union maintained that the problems being experienced in the local governments are caused by the commission.”…May we, therefore, use this opportunity to inform the State Government that, to a large extent, the corruption and ineptitude experienced in the local governments, derive from the actions and inactions of the Local Government Service Commission.”The union also accused the commission of being behind the recent disagreement between it and the Government.”It is worthy of note to state that the recent rift between our union and Government on staff verification was caused by the inability of the commission to furnish Government with the authentic nominal role of staff which ordinarily should be in their custody. To cover the glaring inefficiency, the commission rather misled the Government to approving the gathering of workers for a verification exercise thereby contravening the subsisting state law on COVID-19 that forbids gathering of persons for whatever reasons.” the statement added. The local government workers accused the commission’s permanent secretary of going ultra vires by indefinitely suspending some of its leaders through bogus radio announcements, thereby heightening the impasse. It equally condemned what it described as “random and irregular deployment of principal officers and staff to local governments without recourse to established service rules, poor or nil records maintenance….It noted that the implication was the current mess beclouding the local government system.”We, therefore, urge Imo State Government to appreciate these observations and cause a total review of the commission and its activities for the holistic realization of Government’s prosperous agenda of Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction,” the statement said.In another development, the union has called on its members to present themselves for the Government verification exercise, pending what it calls: “the release of the verification schedule of visit.”The leadership reminded its colleagues to continue to observe social distancing, stay home, in order to stay alive over the coronavirus pandemic.
