COVID-19 Isolation Centres: Well done Imo government

There is no gain recounting the extent to which the recent global scourge called Covid-19 has shaken the world to its roots. What are of global concern right now are the measures the various governments have taken and are taken to curb this pandemic that has terrorised the world.  There is no leader that is worth his name that is folding his hands over the development.

As at moment there is no known cure of this ailment which has claimed thousands of life globally. At the height of it amidst the hues and cries of the people, the governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma set up a nine man Committee headed by an expert in the person of Maurice Iwu among other credible medical practitioners.

Prior to the moment it was quite uncertain what the government was actually doing in the effort to tackle the matter. This had led tongues to wag in condemnation of government’s perceived unpreparedness. This was not helped by the news of suspected victims of the virus which rent the air and frightened the people the more.

Government’s denial that there is yet no case of Covid-19 in the state did not appear to assuage the feelings of the people as some kept querying what facilities are in place to convince anybody that government was actually walking its talk. There were no identified testing centres, isolation centres, testing kits etc

It must be acknowledged however that government distributed some preventive materials like the face mask and sanitizers costing so much. There is no arguing it that protection of lives and property is one of the primary duties of government which they have sworn to uphold. The citizens do not expect anything less than the government rising up to that challenge to provide the best attention to people’s health issues.

It is on this note that we salute the efforts of Gov Uzodinma in commissioning the 6 isolation centres established few days ago in various parts of the state. The centres were adjudged to be of excellent standards. While we commend the government over this we are urging them to still do more by adequately equipping the places so that it will not be like our hospitals that are mere consulting clinics.

This may be considered a feat given the short span of life of this administration which is still trying to settle down. Besides, not many governments have been able to attain the efforts of the Imo government.

While the government is making giant strides in the health sector it should do well to complement this by respecting its obligation to the people in terms of payment of workers’ salaries and pensions.

Edge Express congratulates the government on its efforts to stem the spread of the dreaded virus and advise it to ensure that the best effort is made of the facilities provided given the huge capital outlay.   It should not be visited with the usual nonchalant attitude that characterizes the handling of government activities. The health of the people is involved.
