Tongues are seriously wagging among Imolites over what they have described as high level hypocrisy displayed by the state government in hosting over 5000 people after shutting down schools in the state.
At the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, the governor in a broadcast at the weekend shut down institutions in the state and enumerated efforts to adopt as precautionary measures to curb the spread of the disease.
The government has advocated social distancing and avoidance of gathering or crowd but many were taken aback when it had to swear its commissioners and team of advisers and special assistants which attracted huge crowd of attendees.
The development had sent wrong signals to people who are now wondering if the government is serious about its efforts to stem the dreaded disease in the state. They argue that at a time some other governments are reducing social contacts to a limited number of 20,and 50, Imo government pulled over thousands of people in one event.
One of the participants to the event who simply gave his name as Nnamdi, frowned at the situation when he said that ‘I am not sure that this government meant business at all. How can they crowd the people like this here and said that my children should not go to school? Do you know how many schools population that is here’’, he queried the reporter.
When Edge Express sought the views of the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Oguwuike Nwachukwu, on the matter, he stated that is the handiwork of the opposition constantly pressing the panic button and went on to state a broad range of measures put in place by the government.
In his words, ‘’I can assure you that all the people that were inaugurated yesterday came with only their spouses, most of the people who came there came from the opposition, they wanted to see how they can cause problem but they didn’t succeed. There was nobody who was there yesterday whose temperature was not checked, who was not obliged with sanitizer. Not a single person that I am aware of.’’
Nwachukwu went on to assure Imolites that the government is dealing with the COVID-19 issue as professional as possible and in line with the recommendations of the federal government and also international standards.
He assured Imo people there is no reason to panic and advised them to abide by what the government has enlisted as precautionary measures insisting “the opposition does not love the people more than the government”
